the song’s kismet

Sun 2.11.24,

To the Lakota Indians, Skan is the Spirit of all movement, the motion of the universe, which gets the heart pumping inviting air into the birthing life to rcommence its fathomless journey.  It starts with a beep . . . beep . . . beep.  Every time.

It’s your song, you love it, play it over and over,  You’re not sure what it means, but that’s not the point.  The song has taken you over.  You revel in it, abandon yourself to it like a heathen goddess..  You are power, sex, and strength.  You and this song dance, dance, releasing an energy that has taken over and you are reborn.  It starts again; you’ve been given another shot with  renewed strength, a new perspective.  It has all worked out.

My song, in this present reincarnation, is Miley Cyrus’ Flowers. In the song’s official video it starts with Miley in an Yves Saint Laurent gold lamé long fitted dress with hood as she sets to boogeying down  an empty highway shaking her booty and letting us know she’s taking care of business.  I stumbled upon this song on YouTube when It first came out and I just loved it.  Its become a big hit song of the year.  I see a video of her performing the song at an outdoor concert and a woman in the audience is singing the very same lines I keep repeating.

The song itself has a power beyond Miley.  Remember the song that was popular when you as a girl was becoming sexually aware, the boobs, the pubic hair, the boys’ looks.  It is the song that awakens us, it carries a message beyond what the musician, song writer or singer intends.  Kismet.

Manhattan Seeress Cover copy.jpg

Eight o'clock Sunday morning, the police arrive at her apartment in Greenwich Village, "How long have you been living here?" The roommate Elizabeth, after having accepted her half of the deposit money and rent for their new apartment, has called the police.

New York City doesn’t open its arms to welcome her, but she’s arrived and the adventure of her life is about to unfold.  She’s come from Maine with an invitation from Sarah Lawrence College to participate in the graduate writing program.

How one becomes a seeress is what this memoir explores. Stories have been specifically selected to illustrate, from the sublime to the practical, a spiritual journey introduced in each chapter by an atout, the Tarot’s major archetypes.   From the Fool, to The World, our human journey with its risk and folly unfolds. There is also an artist here alive to her new world seeking inspiration among artists on the Lower East side, learning the ways and foods of her Chinese neighbors, falling in love.
