Newyork city

Sun 9.10.23,

Driving across country on my way to Mexico, I came upon NYC on a night like you see in the picture above. I thought it was so gorgeous I doubled back and drove through in one more time.

Sad, sad message this week from Mayor Adams of New York City, https://twitter.com/nycphotog/status/1699607841483465122?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1699683261948051597%7Ctwgr%5Eefe0b16af2689d93f2539bf0588e5b7ef10d532f%7Ctwcon%5Es4_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.zerohedge.com%2Fnews%2F2023-09-08%2Fwhere-democrats-went-wrong

I lived in New York City for over 20 years.  It was something for me akin to a kid getting the keys to the greatest toy store in the world.  If you are an artist of any kind you find yourself feasting everyday.  In my first months in the city, I’m talking Mahhattan, I would go around repeating phrases spoken in the New Yauk accent.  From a hick in small town America it was a most wonderful de trop.

New York City is one of the great cities of the world.  It expresses the American spirit delightfully.  It is sassy, pragmatic, impatient and utterly democratic.  This is so because there are so many people of every shade, political persuasion, religious belief that you have no choice but to make room for everyone.

Rather than bore you with political bromides, I would rather show you my New York:

It starts here on the Lower East Side, grad student, first apartment, the most interesting neighborhood in the city.  I lived in a building where everyone was an artist of one kind or another

The East Side # 6; subways are NYC’s front parlor, from homeless to billionares, all are accepted

Walking about town:

A Large crosstown avenue

Ms. Liberty, of course

Shopping  -- Presentation is all in the city where everybody is hustling; how you look, how you dress, your make-up, shoes, may be commented on by total strangers who admire what you’ve done to yourself.

“Making it”  you’ve arrived at the point where you’ve escaped the aphorism, Living in New York, you can either have an apartment or a life, but not both. This is my new neighborhood on the Upper East Side, still travelling on the #6, now that I’m making money.  It’s elegant, but not as much fun as the Latino bar on the lower east side which is illegal but the police allow it as long as there is no trouble, great Latino dancers.

MANHATTAN SEERESS NOW ON EBOOKS

Manhattan Seeress Cover copy.jpg

Eight o'clock Sunday morning, the police arrive at her apartment in Greenwich Village, "How long have you been living here?" The roommate Elizabeth, after having accepted her half of the deposit money and rent for their new apartment, has called the police.

New York City doesn’t open its arms to welcome her, but she’s arrived and the adventure of her life is about to unfold.  She’s come from Maine with an invitation from Sarah Lawrence College to participate in the graduate writing program.

How one becomes a seeress is what this memoir explores. Stories have been specifically selected to illustrate, from the sublime to the practical, a spiritual journey introduced in each chapter by an atout, the Tarot’s major archetypes.   From the Fool, to The World, our human journey with its risk and folly unfolds. There is also an artist here alive to her new world seeking inspiration among artists on the Lower East side, learning the ways and foods of her Chinese neighbors, falling in love.
